Why is this action important?
Local and regional governments are responsible for delivering two-thirds of the Sustainable Development Goal targets – yet existing United Nations mechanisms do not adequately reflect their central role in achieving the 2030 Agenda.
They bring essential policy innovation, inclusion and service delivery – directly impacting communities and address equity, resilience and sustainability across all Sustainable Development Goals.
The – mandated by Action 55(e) of the Pact for the Future – provides complementary, cost-effective recommendations to enhance engagement with local and regional governments across the United Nations system. The recommendations draw on the work of the Advisory Group on Local and Regional Governments, and consultations with Member States, the United Nations system, and the broader constituency of local and regional government associations.
Stronger synergies across United Nations mechanisms are needed to maximize national-level implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. This includes integrating local and regional governments into Common Country Analyses, United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks, Voluntary National Reviews and Voluntary Local Reviews, while also enhancing United Nations coordination on SDG delivery.
As the United Nations approaches its 80th anniversary, meaningful engagement with local and regional governments is essential to reinvigorate multilateralism – and deliver on the 2030 promise with real, local impact.
