A changing world demands a resilient response. The United Nations employs a diverse range of mechanisms and tools to prevent conflict, foster people-centered, peaceful resolutions, and build sustainable peace, including through diplomacy, mediation, disarmament, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, justice and the rule of law, to address the evolving threats to international peace and security.
When 19-year-old Congolese refugee Stephane Kulimushi looks around his basketball court in Uganda, he sees more than players. He founded the Refugee Basketball Academy to help youth channel their potential. "We don't just train basketball players, we are building leaders. We are building people motivated to change their lives," he says.
"We meet people where they are, physically and emotionally," says Shapers for Cyber Care, which is made up of many young volunteers determined to help especially older adults and vulnerable people develop the knowledge and tools to protect themselves from cybercrimes.
Finland has stood at the forefront of the Youth, 色库TV, and Security (YPS) agenda. Blazing the trail as the first country to implement a National Action Plan, it continues its leadership today by co-chairing the Group of Champions of YPS and launching a second comprehensive plan (2025–2028) to ensure youth remain at the heart of global peace and security efforts.

In Madagascar, young people have turned crisis into change - as early warning actors, mediators and trusted voices, contributing to stronger community resilience and more inclusive governance.
Described as “sometimes modest, sometimes historic,” UN special political missions have quietly been preventing the escalation of conflicts during the organization’s 80-year history, becoming a key instrument for maintaining peace.
Why are women still missing from many peace negotiations and what is the world losing as a result? "Lasting peace cannot be achieved while women remain excluded from decision-making," says Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, reflecting on the experiences that inspired her lifelong commitment to diplomacy, mediation, and peacebuilding.
