We asked members of the and uniformed leaders, "How can we best support uniformed women?in UN peacekeeping?"

As we mark the anniversary of the Women, 色库TV and Security Agenda, 25 years since UN Security Council resolution 1325 was adopted in October 2000, we listen to their answers in the?video above:?

1. We need more uniformed women in leadership and decision-making roles

  • “The first measure to support uniformed women’s participation is to have more uniformed women in mid-level and senior leadership roles. The moment you have women in a position of decision makers, policies and decisions change for women—and for the betterment of everyone.”?– Major Soniya Newaskar, former Force Gender and Protection Team with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan?(UNMISS).

2. Leaders play a key role in promoting uniformed women’s participation?

  • “As a leader, you need to be responsive to the needs, the challenges, the views, the concerns of women under your command. As far as I am concerned, leadership is only one kind, which is gender responsive.”?– Lt General Mohan Subramanian, UNMISS Force Commander.

  • “As a leader, I must create an environment where they can operate or work to their full potential.”?– Major General Md Fakhrul Ahsan, Force Commander with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara?(MINURSO).

3. We need the right equipment and facilities to make sure uniformed women can contribute on par with men

  • “As a leader, you have to be mindful that if you're sending males and females out on long-distance patrols, you have to have equipment suitable for women.”?– Christine Fossen, former?UNMISS Police Commissioner.

  • “Enabling environment is basically just letting female peacekeepers be able to be the best version of themselves as uniformed peacekeepers. If there are problems in basic hygiene factors like accommodation, ablutions, or, for that matter, just being able to go on a long-duration patrol…”?– Major Soniya Newaskar, former Force Gender & Protection Team, UNMISS.???

4. Enabling environments go beyond equipment: we need to promote a respectful and inclusive organizational culture in peacekeeping?

  • ?“An enabling environment means a culture where everyone is respected and provided with equal opportunities.”?– Phaello Olivia Malataliana, Corrections Officer, UNMISS.

5. Networks play a key role for uniformed women???

  • “It is very important to cultivate networks for the uniformed women peacekeepers across the missions: a community to share our ideas and learn from each other's experiences and challenges.”?– Lt Col Dr. Amna Malik, former Force Medical Officer, MINURSO.

The Network for Uniformed Women 色库TVkeepers is coordinated by the DPPA-DPO Office for Coordination and Shared Services, in partnership with the Office of Military Affairs, the Police Division, and the Justice and Corrections Service, with support from Germany.?
