\t<\/span>  EXPERT GROUP MEETING ON UPDATING ASSESSMENT OF WATER RESOURCES<\/p>\n

\t\t\t<\/span>IN ESCWA MEMBER COUNTRIES OPENS IN BEIRUT<\/p>\n

  BEIRUT, 20  April  (UN Information  Service)  —  Under the  patronage  of<\/p>\n

Sleiman  Trabulsi,   Lebanese  Minister  of   Oil,  Water  and   Electricity<\/p>\n

Resources, an  Expert Group  Meeting on  "Updating the  Assessment of  Water<\/p>\n

Resources in  the ESCWA Member Countries"  initiated by  the Energy, Natural<\/p>\n

Resources and  Environment  Division  of  the United  Nations  Economic  and<\/p>\n

Social Commission for  Western Asia (ESCWA)  was opened today at  the United<\/p>\n

Nations House in Beirut.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

  The  objective of the meeting,  which was opened by  the Lebanese Minister<\/p>\n

of  Oil, Water  Resources and  Electricity  and Hazem  El-Beblawi, Executive<\/p>\n

Secretary of  ESCWA, is  to review  the progress  made at  the national  and<\/p>\n

regional  levels in  improving  water-resource knowledge,  including  shared<\/p>\n

sources, water availability, potential and demand, status of  implementation<\/p>\n

of supply and demand  management measures, and institutional and legislative<\/p>\n

evolution in the ESCWA region.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

  The four-day  meeting provides  a forum  for the  exchange of  experiences<\/p>\n

between    government-designated    water   professionals,    experts    and<\/p>\n

participants. Topics to  be covered  include water  resource assessment  and<\/p>\n

regional integrated  water management,  recent  advances in  water-resource-<\/p>\n

assessment  techniques with  regard to  improvements in  the application  of<\/p>\n

existing  or  newly developed  methodologies,  isotopes,  modelling, remote-<\/p>\n

sensing techniques,  and  the  use  of the  Geographic  Information  System.<\/p>\n

Legal,  economic,  social   and  administrative  frameworks  will  also   be<\/p>\n

discussed.   The outcome  of the  meeting will  contribute towards  improved<\/p>\n

assessment,  development,  utilization   and  management  of  scarce   water<\/p>\n

resources in the ESCWA region.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

  The  meeting was  attended  by  representatives  of  ESCWA  member  States<\/p>\n

(Bahrain,  Egypt, Iraq,  Jordan, Kuwait,  Lebanon, Oman,  Palestine,  Qatar,<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia,  Syria, United Arab  Emirates and  Yemen).   Delegates of  the<\/p>\n

United   Nations  Secretariat   bodies,   specialized  agencies   and  other<\/p>\n

organizations including  the Food  and Agriculture  Organization (FAO),  the<\/p>\n

United Nations Educational, Scientific  and Cultural Organization  (UNESCO),<\/p>\n

the United  Nations Environment Programme  (UNEP), the World  Meteorological<\/p>\n

Organization (WMO), the  World Health Organization (WHO), the  International<\/p>\n

Atomic  Energy  Agency  (IAEA),  the  United  Nations  University,  the Gulf<\/p>\n

Cooperation Council,  King Abdulaziz City  for Science  and Technology,  and<\/p>\n

the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).   A number of universities,<\/p>\n

research  centres  and  nongovernmental  organizations  representatives  and<\/p>\n

resource persons were also present.<\/p>\n
