On the 30th of June 2023 I joined the Political, É«¿âTV and Security team in the OPGA marking the third phase of my rotation. The move come precisely after the fellow\u2019s official trip to Washington DC in which I had the opportunity to get unprecedented insight foreign policy of the host country of the UN HQ and the largest contributor of the UN regular budget, the United States of America at UN level as well as bilateral level. The trip covered the US State Department, embassies, think-tanks, international financial institutions and notably the United Nations Information Centre which provided us as fellows a broad overview of the role played by the office itself the UN agencies based in country\u2019s capital. At the Botswana Embassy, I had the opportunity to meet His Excellency Onkokame Kitso Mokaila, Ambassador of the Republic of Botswana to the United States of America who shared his wisdom on leadership, diplomacy and politics in general. The meetings have beyond reasonable doubt imparted considerable understanding and wisdom on the interlinkages of bilateral and multilateral diplomacy and how the youth fit within and between these fora.<\/p>\n
The efforts by the PGA, H.E Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si to expose the fellows to all aspects of diplomacy is highly commendable and it solidifies the fact that this fellowship programme aims to make youth informed, knowledgeable, and effective agents of change. His Excellency, Mr. Dennis Francis was on the 1st of June 2023 elected PGA for the 78th session of the General Assembly. The fact that he has committed to continuing the PGA fellowship programme is assuring and encouraging for proponents of youth empowerment like myself who wish to see the continuation and expansion of programmes like these within and outside the UN.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/div>\r\nFrom the outset I would like to note that the magnitude of this programme to myself, my country Botswana, and the global community has a significant bearing on my overall experience thus far. As a young diplomat with keen interest in multilateral diplomacy, being nominated to learn and serve under one of the principal organs of the United Nations has been a dream come true. As a patriot, it avails an opportunity of being an extension of my country\u2019s policy of an inclusive and overarching contribution to multilateralism and global solidarity particularly with respect to realizing the tenets of the 2030 Agenda. Furthermore, as a proponent of meaningful youth engagement in policy formulation, it brings me great delight to be part of one of the UN\u2019s transformative reform initiatives of empowering the youth to be active and informed actors of the UN mandate.\r\n\r\nOn that background, I can confidently confirm that the programme has been to an exceptional start. The President of the General Assembly has personally welcomed us and outlined his vision on Youth Engagement as well as his priorities for this session of the General Assembly. The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) meticulously crafted a two weeks training programme that brought myself and the rest of the fellows up to speed with work of the OPGA as well as the rest of the UN system. I further laud the Office of the President of the General Assembly (OPGA) for their mentorship initiative that has expeditiously allowed me to adapt and settle in well.\r\n\r\nI have been assigned to the Legal, Budget and Reform team in the OPGA for the first phase of rotation across all other units. As it stands, with all the tasks\/assignments from my unit there is a clear indication that I will return to capital a well-rounded diplomat.
