HIGH-LEVEL VIRTUAL DISCUSSION ON \u201cTHE CURRENT SITUATION IN MYANMAR, IMPLICATIONS FOR THE ROHINGYA MINORITY\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

  • The President spoke at the High-level virtual discussion on \u2018The current situation in Myanmar, implications for the Rohingya minority\u2019 organized by the Permanent Missions of Bangladesh, Canada, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Turkey and the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect. The President reflected on his visit to Cox\u2019s Bazaar and the challenges facing the Rohingya people and Bangladesh.\u00a0<\/li>\n
  • The President said: \u201cThe rights of Rohingya to citizenship and to freedom of movement must be assured so they are not again subject to unimaginable violence. This is intimately linked to the creation of conditions conducive to the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return of all Rohingya refugees and IDPs.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    CONFERENCE OF STATE PARTIES TO THE CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES <\/strong><\/p>\n

    • The President also spoke at 14th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which is taking place in the General Assembly Hall today.<\/li>\n
    • The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was adopted by the General Assembly by its resolution 61\/106 of 13 December 2006. It came into force on 3 May 2008 upon its 20th ratification. Since 2008, the sessions of the Conference of States Parties convened at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The 13th session of the COSP was postponed from its original date of 10-12 June 2020 to 30 November 2020 to 3 December 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This created an unusual situation where the 75th President of the General Assembly will participate in two successive sessions.<\/li>\n
    • The President said: \u201cAs I have so often said, each of us has experienced the pandemic, but not all of us have experienced it the same. For persons living with disabilities, the challenges have been more pronounced, more specific to their circumstances. At the same time, we must remember that there are positive examples as well, where cities and communities went the extra mile and ensured that no one was left behind, that all people were protected and empowered in this time of need. We must mine our experiences for these best practices.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      QUESTIONS ON UPCOMING GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETINGS <\/strong><\/p>\n

      • When asked about a meeting of General Assembly on Myanmar, the Deputy Spokesperson confirmed there will be a meeting on Friday at 3PM in the General Assembly Hall to consider the draft resolution.<\/li>\n
      • When asked about the meeting to appoint the Secretary-General, the Deputy Spokesperson confirmed it will take place on 18 June at 9AM in the General Assembly Hall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
