Reporters Without Borders chose to give its 2019 World Press Freedom Index the title: \u201ca cycle of fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_code _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243;]\n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"250\" src=\"\/\/www.un.org\/webcast\/1362235914001\/B1J3DDQJf_default\/index.html?videoId=6032590610001\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] -->[\/et_pb_code][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>This Day should be a celebration of journalists, editors, photographers, film-makers, publishers, policy-makers \u2013 of all those who contribute to, and create the conditions for, a free, pluralistic and independent media.<\/p>\n<p>But it has also become a sobering occasion; as the media space shrinks across the world, as restrictive laws and policies are enacted. It has become a chilling occasion, as media workers \u2013 and their families \u2013 are subjected to threats and reprisals.<\/p>\n<p>As in so many fields, women are disproportionately affected \u2013 contending with sexist abuse and sexual harassment online, as well as physical sexual violence, including rape. Too often, these attacks go unpunished.<\/p>\n<p>At a time when nationalist populism and extremism are on the rise, when hate speech, rumors and lies can spread like wildfire, we need journalism \u2013 high-quality, independent and diverse media \u2013 more than ever.<\/p>\n<p>It is journalists who shine a spotlight on abuse and corruption. It is journalists who tell the stories that need to be told. It is journalists who can give voice to those to whom nobody listens. It is journalists who hold up a mirror to society.
