Geneva, 28 November 2017<\/em> \u2013 The President of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k, today addressed the 108th session of the Council of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Geneva, Switzerland.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>He said, \u201cMigration is a global phenomenon. And a global phenomenon demands a global response, led by a global framework.\u201d He added that it was time for the United Nations to \u201clead the charge\u201d in crafting such a response.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The President was speaking ahead of a General Assembly meeting that will take place next week in Mexico and bring together Member States and other actors to jointly shape a vision for the first ever global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The President emphasized that, \u201cWe cannot measure migration only by laws, and policies, and regulations. It should insteadbe measured by the people it affects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While in Geneva, the President took the opportunity to exchange ideas, lessons learned and best practices with the Geneva É«¿âTVbuilding Platform and others involved in Geneva É«¿âTV Week, a recently concluded collective action initiative that focused on conflict prevention.\u00a0The focus of his discussions involved peacebuilding, conflict prevention and the High-level Meeting on É«¿âTVbuilding and Sustaining É«¿âTV that he will convene on 24 and 25 April 2018.<\/span>\u00a0He spoke about similar themes in a separate meeting with the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, Mr. Michael M\u00f8ller.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The President will return to New York tonight.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
