Atifete Jahjaga served as the first woman President of Kosovo from 2011 to 2016. A staunch advocate for women’s rights, she established a council during her presidency dedicated to supporting survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, paving the way for a legal framework to support survivors and promote their inclusion in peace processes. In 2018, she founded the Jahjaga Foundation, focusing on youth and women’s empowerment to drive social change.

Long before the Women, ɫ��TV and Security agenda existed, women were making and maintaining peace. Had the world embraced the values of this agenda earlier, how many wars, conflicts, and genocides might have been prevented?”

Gordana Đorić is the founder and president of the businesswomen’s association Avenija in Laplje Selo, Kosovo*. Established in 2000, the organisation empowers women through entrepreneurship, cultural preservation and community development. Under her leadership, Avenija has supported over 500 women, promoting economic independence and social inclusion.

My association’s inter-ethnic work has helped overcome divisive narratives. That gives me the strength to keep going.”

Maria de Lurdes, founder of the Mozambican Association for Community Education, leads grassroots efforts in Cabo Delgado to prevent child labour, resist youth recruitment by extremist organisations and promote social cohesion. Through her civil society platform and as part of the Sentinel of ɫ��TV network, she empowers women to lead in decision-making and peacebuilding, advocating for inclusive peace in resettlement centres and conflict-affected communities.

I decided to work in this area because I saw a significant gap - there was no one to speak up for women regarding their rights and how they deserved to be treated. While women were present in meetings I attended, they felt unable to speak out due to fear of retaliation from their husbands.”

Based in Southern Lebanon, Captain Seungho Jeong (Republic of Korea) serves as a Civil-Military Cooperation Officer with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. Through language classes, vocational training and community outreach, the peacekeeper helps build trust between the UN and host communities while contributing to post-conflict recovery, women’s resilience, and local leadership.

The transformation of local communities inspires me the most. Witnessing people, especially women, grow in confidence and independence through our programs - from initial hesitation to active participation - gives me a deep sense of purpose and motivates me to continue our efforts.”

Zeinab Onour Mohammed Adam is a Sudanese academic and gender advocate working at the Red Sea University, Port Sudan. As part of the We Rise project, she has trained rural women in agriculture, trade and economic rights, bridging gender gaps and empowering communities. With decades of activism and a background in peace education, she promotes gender equality across Sudan through research, training and inclusive community development.

Women in rural areas are socially isolated due to social and economic barriers that limit them to childbearing and reproductive responsibilities. We Rise has contributed to enhancing their self-confidence, making them more aware of the importance of their economic participation and inspiring and empowering local women.”

Amna Idres Musa Mahamod leads the Al-Wifag Women’s Association in Toker, Sudan. Trained through the We Rise program, she champions gender equality and economic rights for women in rural areas. Amna and her group are helping to reshape their community by advocating for women’s financial independence, economic empowerment, access to land and greater leadership opportunities in the agricultural sector.

The rural Toker community in northeastern Sudan disapproves of their women selling their agricultural harvest at the market and interacting with male traders. They only work in agriculture during the harvest season and receive lower wages than men.”

Chantal Solange Touabena advocates for peace and women’s rights in the Central African Republic. As Vice President of the Truth, Justice, Reparation and Reconciliation Commission and Coordinator of the ɫ��TV Club CAR, she works to promote legal reform and community empowerment. A founder of a grassroots women’s association, Chantal leads efforts to prevent conflict and advance gender equality in her country.

My vision is to guide women and girls toward a shift in mindset and behaviour for enlightened leadership, and to pass the torch to tomorrow’s young women.”

Miryam Djangala-Fall is a Central African activist and survivor of conflict-related sexual violence. In 2018, she founded the Movement of Survivors of Sexual Violence to support and empower other survivors. Under her leadership, the organisation has grown to over 700 members, providing care, raising awareness and advocating for justice. Miryam received the 2024 Simone Veil Prize for her dedication to survivor advocacy.

We believe in the strength of unity. ‘Nothing about us without us’, meaning we are fully involved in the peace process before, during and after so that we can achieve peace in our country.”

For over 15 years, Rana Rahal has served as a Gender Affairs Officer with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. With a deep understanding of the realities faced by Lebanese women, she promotes gender equality and women’s rights in both civilian and military settings. Working side by side with local communities, she helps to ensure their voices are heard and their many contributions are not lost.

As a Lebanese woman who was born in war and has lived through it many times, the most important thing is to make our voices heard when the noise is very loud.”

Corporal Yang Xiaomin serves with the Chinese Quick Reaction Force of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), leading patrols, conducting emergency operations and evacuations to protect civilians and UN personnel. Her courage and commitment exemplify the growing leadership of women peacekeepers and their critical role in building safer, more resilient communities in conflict-affected areas. Each year, UNISFA conducts around 4,500 Gender Responsive Patrols, made up of at least 50% women peacekeepers, to reach and support people in vulnerable contexts throughout Abyei.

We deploy women to engage in peacekeeping to provide better support for the communities we protect.”

Merelea Dileba Drotini, a senior police officer from Fiji, serves in Abyei as a Gender Officer with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and works to prevent and respond to sexual and gender-based violence. Through community outreach, survivor support and youth mentoring, she helps raise awareness, build trust and ensure vulnerable groups are protected and empowered.

As only the second Fijian female police officer in Abyei, I never let anything slow me down. I’m always aware that women in uniform, no matter where we come from, are being watched as role models. Our presence brings hope and inspires strength.”

Elsie Lotendo is a passionate activist working to end violence against women and girls. She leads campaigns to raise awareness about cyberstalking, hate speech, tribal discrimination, and challenging misinformation and harmful narratives both online and offline. Through her advocacy, Elsie empowers young women to reclaim digital spaces, speak out against injustice and drive positive change in their communities.

When there is hatred and disinformation, it often leads to violence, and in times of violence, it is women who are most affected. That is why it is essential for women to know their rights and be actively involved in peace efforts by standing against violence, hate speech and disinformation.”

Quibibi Faquihe Buana, a displaced woman from Cabo Delgado, serves as a district facilitator on the Women, ɫ��TV and Security agenda in the Marrocane resettlement centre where she lives. A recognised peace champion, she trains, engages and mobilises women on gender-based violence prevention and uses mobile tools to report violence.

Seeing another woman rise is what fills me with pride. Walking into her home and receiving the same support I wanted when I needed help is incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that I am a woman with the power to prevent acts of violence and conflicts in my community inspires me to lift up those women who feel at their lowest.”

Pédrica Saint-Jean is Haiti’s Minister for Women and Women’s Rights. A former coordinator of the Haitian League of Women for Renewal, she is a fierce advocate for gender equality and women’s meaningful political participation. A survivor of multiple armed attacks and a symbol of resilience, Pédrica pushes for stronger responses to gender-based violence and works to elevate Haitian women’s leadership in peacebuilding and governance.

Equality, empowerment, and the fulfilment of women’s and girls’ fundamental rights must not be a luxury, but a reality accessible to every woman and every girl.”

Haitian feminist, activist, and nonprofit leader Clyfane Saintil works to advance gender equality and empower young women in Haiti. She is currently the Secretary-General at Fondation TOYA, an organisation focused on education, leadership and gender justice. Clyfane is known for her grassroots activism and dedication to uplifting Haitian girls and women through education, critical thinking and confidence-building.

Change begins in our communities, where women and girls rise and when men choose to be allies rather than obstacles.”

Doris Poni Mogga is a South Sudanese lawyer within the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, bringing mobile courts to conflict-affected and remote areas of South Sudan. A role model within the justice system, she helps to create safer environments for women and girls, ensuring survivors and witnesses are treated with dignity throughout legal proceedings.

Supporting mobile courts has been among my proudest achievements. They restore trust in the rule of law and bring justice closer to communities and people that would otherwise be forgotten.”

Palestinian lawyer, feminist and human rights defender Randa Siniora has over 30 years of experience advancing justice for women under military occupation. As Director of the Women’s Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling, she leads efforts to address gender-based violence and secure legal protections for Palestinian women. In 2018, she became the first Palestinian woman civil society representative to brief the UN Security Council, highlighting the intersection of gender, occupation and systemic violence.

As Palestinian women, we don't want to be seen only as victims and our stories told as those of victims. We are initiators of change, asking first and foremost for prevention, protection, and meaningful political participation.”

Amani Aruri is a Palestinian feminist and advocate for peace and human rights. Her activism challenges systems of violence, militarism and exclusion and pushes for peace that is inclusive and rooted in justice. Amani’s work centers on the lived experiences of Palestinian women and girls under occupation, ensuring their voices shape the path toward lasting peace.

Start where you are, engage locally, learn from your community and then build outward. Don’t wait for permission. Mobilise, document and connect with other feminists globally. Transformation often begins from the ground up.”

Anne-Marie Dongui is the Deputy Director of the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Hailing from the Ivory Coast, she has championed the rights of women and marginalised communities for over 25 years, with a focus on their inclusion in peace processes. Dongui’s leadership is rooted in restoring dignity, accountability and support for victims/survivors of abuse.

A woman has to work twice as hard as a man to earn her place. In some countries where I have worked, officials have refused to shake my hand simply because I am a woman. The challenge of being accepted as a woman is real and it matters - because without it, you can’t do your work.”

Nelly Mbangu is a Congolese human rights defender and lawyer from North Kivu, Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite facing threats and displacement, she campaigns for the rights of Congolese women and children, provides legal aid to and empowers victims/survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. She also coordinates Sauti ya Mama Mukongomani, a peace movement uniting over 30 women’s organisations.

I’ve always said, after violence, there is life. There is life, because I lived through it. I fought to become who I am today. So I believe that after every act of violence, if you continue to believe in your strength, in your potential, you never truly lose. After violence, there is life. And if there is life, there is hope.”

A lawyer and civil society leader, Mona Mohamed Omaer Hamad works with Sorkenat Organisation in Sudan to raise awareness of women’s rights, peacebuilding and UN Security Council resolution 1325. She empowers women to recognise their role in democratic change and peace processes, challenging gender-based violence and traditional limitations through education and legal advocacy.

I want women to go out and participate in all issues and platforms, to be present in state institutions as leaders capable of decision making, to intervene to resolve conflicts side by side with men and to represent women at the highest level.”

Lubna Ezzedine is a local peace mediator, educator, and social/environmental activist based in Tyre, South Lebanon. A trusted community leader, she founded a centre empowering women and youth and is a member of Lebanon’s Women’s ɫ��TVbuilding Network. Lubna established her town’s first women’s committee, leading development projects and championing the role of women in public life.

The moment the ceasefire was announced and we returned, I called everyone to find out what their needs were. Many wanted to talk. They wanted to share what happened during the war - their displacement, how they waited in line, how they argued and made up. They have so many stories inside them that they want to let out.”

What happens when two young women in Cyprus choose collaboration over separation? Ayshe Biyikoglu and Eleni Anastasiou, raised on an island divided by over 50 years of conflict and tensions, chose to reach across the divide. With shared roots in psychology and a deep commitment to peace, they co-founded Cypology, a grassroots initiative where Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots imagine a united future.

There is a lot of solidarity between women. Women of both communities in Cyprus come together to discuss peace and reconcile. By supporting each other, we strive to bring about change and amplify our voices in a male-dominated world.”

In southern Lebanon, an area deeply affected by recurring conflict, UN peacekeepers help to create a safer reality. One of only eight women deminers with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, Warrant Officer Ham Sievhong from Cambodia, a country with a legacy of landmine contamination, helps communities safely return to their homes and rebuild their lives.

Working in a heavily male-dominated field such as demining can present unique challenges, including being heard and having equal opportunities for advancement. Overcoming them requires persistence, resilience, and building supportive networks.”

General Ghislaine Léa Yangongo is a trailblazer in the Central African Republic’s military, as the first woman to attain the rank of General. After joining the army in 1997, she rose through the ranks to command Bangui’s Air Force base. As an advocate for women’s inclusion at all levels, Ghislaine now helps lead the implementation of the Women, ɫ��TV and Security National Action Plan.

Women in the national army have come a long way. My greatest achievement is having inspired others, giving them the motivation and courage to pursue their careers just like their male colleagues."

Police Commissioner Christine Fossen leads the UN Police component in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. With over 30 years of service in the Norwegian police force, she has been involved the promotion of justice, fighting organised crime and now, peacekeeping. In South Sudan, she also mentors members of the mission’s Network for Uniformed Women ɫ��TVkeepers.

Leadership is not about rank. It’s about using your voice, protecting others and setting an example every day."

Mélanie Musau Kabamba is a journalist, women’s and disability rights leader in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As president of the Professional and Production Centre for Persons with Disabilities, she champions entrepreneurship and political participation for people with disabilities, particularly women. A leader in national politics, Mélanie believes women with disabilities are vital to building peace and influencing decision-making.

I am a woman living with a disability. It gives me pride, because disability is not physical, it's a mental construct. As my mind is sharp, I consider myself a whole person just like everyone else."

For this project, we made every effort to collaborate with local women photographers in each context. In South Sudan, the country found itself on the brink of another civil war in early 2025, so we had to quickly adapt and find alternative ways to tell these important stories.

Through Her Lens: Women Rising for ɫ��TV

From Haiti to Lebanon, Cyprus to Sudan, women are too often portrayed as victims of conflict rather than as agents of change. Their voices are essential in shaping lasting peace, yet their efforts are frequently overlooked or undervalued.

The Women, ɫ��TV and Security agenda, established in 2000 through UN Security Council resolution 1325, recognises the disproportionate impact of conflict on women and girls, but also the powerful role women play in building and protecting peace. Evidence shows that peace agreements with women signatories have a better chance of succeeding and lasting longer. Yet women’s full, equal, and meaningful participation in peace and security remains elusive, and their voices and rights are increasingly under threat.

This exhibition features women transforming their communities and advocating for their futures. As peacebuilders and UN peacekeepers, mediators and human rights defenders, women and their allies strive to make their voices heard above the noise and build more just societies where everyone can contribute equally, even in times when peace appears to be a distant dream. Because when women rise, they lead. When women lead, peace follows.

Each image, captured by local women photographers who often share the same struggles and aspirations, reflects the power and resilience of women as changemakers. The exhibition is a call to amplify their voices, protect their rights, and ensure their place at every table where peace is forged.

Twenty-five years after the adoption of the Women, ɫ��TV and Security agenda, challenges persist across the globe. Women remain underrepresented in peace processes and decision-making spaces, while a rising backlash threatens their hard-won human rights. Armed conflicts, coupled with deepening gender inequality, continue to disproportionately affect women and girls, subjecting them to violence, displacement, marginalisation and deprivation of basic rights - stripping them of their access to justice, education and healthcare, among others.

Even after the guns fall silent, the consequences endure. Women and girls remain at risk from lasting trauma and gender-based violence, and in too many places, are still exposed to the dangers of unexploded ordnance and other persistent threats.

Yet in the face of these challenges, women continue to rise...

Women working in conflicts and crises face tremendous, sometimes life-threatening, risks – even safely organising photo shoots or collaborating with local women photographers in some parts of the world was impossible. This reflects the very real challenges faced by women peacebuilders, navigating danger, displacement and the daily risks of telling stories in conflict-affected and inaccessible areas.

We would like to share our deep appreciation for each and every one of these women – behind and in front of the camera – and for all the colleagues and partners across the world who have made this exhibit possible and who continue to stand firm in their commitments to the Women, ɫ��TV, and Security agenda.

Witnessing A Way Forward

UN Global Advocate Giles Duley

Mr. Giles Duley is a documentary photographer, writer, and storyteller. His work focuses on the longterm humanitarian impact of conflict. He captures the strength of those who fight adversity rather than succumb to it and his photographs draw the viewer to the subject, creating intimacy and empathy for lives differing from ours only in circumstance.

The United Nations appointed Mr. Giles Duley on 3 December, the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, as the first United Nations Global Advocate for persons with disabilities in conflict and peacebuilding situations. The Global Advocate will speak to the immediate and long-term needs and rights of persons injured in conflict and living with disabilities in conflict and peacebuilding situations, including those affected by explosive ordnance. He will ensure that the voices of those disabled by explosive ordnance are heard in the larger conversations on persons with disabilities in peacebuilding processes. Mr. Duley will complement the work of the Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities. He will advocate for the universalization of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The United Nations Secretary-General has stated: “There are more than one billion people with disabilities in the world. Realizing their rights is a matter of justice and investment in our common future. It is also central to realizing the core promise of the 2030 Agenda to leave no one behind." The role is administered by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), Department of ɫ��TV Operations.

Who is UNMAS?

Established in 1997, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) works to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action, leading operational responses at the country level, and in support of peace operations, as well as through the development of standards, policies and norms. As a specialized service of the United Nations located within the Department of ɫ��TV Operations, UNMAS operates under UN legislative mandates of both the General Assembly and the Security Council and advocates for the universalization and supports the implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction; (ii) Protocol on prohibitions or restrictions on the use of mines, booby-traps and other devices (Protocol II); and (iii) Convention on Cluster Munitions (A/C.1/63/5 Part II). In addition to anti-personnel mines, challenges remain with respect to all other explosive remnants of war. On 12 November 2006, the Secretary-General welcomed the entry into force of Protocol V on explosive remnants of war from the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons.

What is April 4th?

On 8 December 2005, the General Assembly declared that 4 April of each year shall be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. It called for continued efforts by States, with the assistance of the United Nations and relevant organizations, to foster the establishment and development of national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosive remnants of war constitute a serious threat to the safety, health, and lives of the civilian population, or an impediment to social and economic development at the national and local levels.

Witnessing A Way Forward

In conflict and post-conflict situations the goal should always be to create projects designed, implemented and led by local partners and communities. In my experience, this is the most impactful and sustainable way to rebuild lives; allow marginalised communities to empower themselves; and to create a lasting peace."

At least 60 states around the world are still contaminated with landmines, some dating back more than 50 years.^*

Despite the efforts of the United Nations, Member States, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and communities, in 2022 unexploded remnants killed or injured at least 4,710 people across 49 countries. To commemorate International Mine Action Day 2024, we invite you to hear from those directly involved in and affected by mine action - and witness the way forward. UKRAINE CASE STUDY

Ukraine is one of the most mined states in the world. The HALO Trust employs over 1,200 Ukrainian staff - nearly 30% of whom are women - to conduct mine clearance, carry out surveys, and provide mine risk education around the country. As well as keeping Ukrainians safe, their work is also enabling the recovery of the country’s agricultural sector and helping displaced people to return home.

Oleksandra lives in a part of the Kyiv region that is now contaminated with unexploded ordnance. She joined HALO Trust to train as a deminer to help ensure that Ukraine’s land is safe for her two children and future generations.

MOTIVATION

Assistive technologies, including wheelchairs and mobility aids, can help people with landmine injuries and other disabilities to live full and independent lives. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities considers mobility and inclusion to be a human right. Yet in the Global South, less than 5% of people who need them have access to appropriate wheelchairs.

Sometimes, wheelchairs designed for use in urban settings aren’t functional in rural environments. Resource constraints can make them unaffordable, or too expensive to repair if they get damaged. A lack of appropriate training means that people may receive wheelchairs that don’t fit properly or aren’t suitable, which can have serious health implications.

In Kenya, NGO Motivation has partnered with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology to design and locally manufacture durable, affordable, rough terrain wheelchairs to ensure everyone has access to suitable wheelchairs.

Nawali, Chad

Back in Sudan, Nawali (who was paralysed following an illness in childhood) was an activist and community organiser working to support those around her. But when the fighting started, she and her family had to flee after soldiers stole her motorised wheelchair. Now living alongside over 150,000 other refugees in Chad’s Adré camp, Nawali is confined to a tent and has to crawl to get to the communal latrines.

Conflicts leave people disabled, and in the case of unexploded ordnance and landmines, this can happen decades later. The United Nations aims to address how the needs of persons with disabilities are accounted for before and during conflicts, as set out in Security Council resolution 2475 which recalls the Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Here are two examples.

Physical injuries aren’t the only danger: UXO risk, and displacement create a constant lack of safety which takes a toll on the mental health of children and young people.

The Ayjal Foundation runs group psychosocial support sessions to help give young people the skills to manage emotional distress and trauma. Working with child psychology experts, as well as local artists and storytellers, they’ve also developed a free Arabic language Psychological First Aid toolkit for teachers and carers.

ODAI AND MARYAM, GAZA

Odai has a developmental disorder which left him Deaf. As a result, he was unable to hear the warning alarm indicating a rocket attack which paralysed him.

Maryam was born with severe cerebral palsy after her mother nearly died in a suicide bombing while pregnant. Maryam is unable to speak, walk or feed herself. Because of her mobility issues her family weren’t able to flee quickly enough when they heard a warning alarm, and she was injured when a rocket hit their family home.

RESOLUTION 2475^*

URGES MEMBER STATES TO ENABLE THE MEANINGFUL PARTICIPATION AND REPRESENTATION OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES, INCLUDING THEIR REPRESENTATIVE ORGANIZATIONS, IN HUMANITARIAN ACTION, CONFLICT PREVENTION, RESOLUTION, RECONCILIATION, RECONSTRUCTION AND PEACEBUILDING, AND TO CONSULT WITH THOSE WITH EXPERTISE WORKING ON DISABILITY MAINSTREAMING."

This year is the fifth anniversary of United Nations Security Council resolution 2475 which calls on Member States to protect the rights of people with disabilities during and in the aftermath of armed conflict. That means making sure that people with disabilities aren’t left behind: making sure safety information like evacuation alerts, sirens, landmine warnings and mine risk education reach everyone who needs to understand them.

UNMAS SYRIA

In 2023 UNMAS Syria trained six people with landmine injuries to deliver MRE training, including Hanan and Ahmad. Ahmad was injured as a teenager, playing in an area with landmines. Now a law student, he teaches other young people about the danger of landmines. This programme has since been paused due to a funding shortage.

KOALAA

Although many people require access to prosthetic devices, upper limb prosthetics in particular face a significant rate of abandonment - sometimes because users don’t find devices to be sufficiently comfortable, functional or culturally appropriate.

Koalaa is one example of a project creating upper limb prosthetic devices designed to be comfortable and affordable. In 2021, they ran a pilot in Sierra Leone, which has a disproportionately high number of amputees. Prosthetic users explained it was important to have the option of a cosmetic prosthetic with a choice of skin tones.

Koalaa worked with them to design a cosmetic attachment to help users feel more comfortable.

Around 100 million people globally need a prosthetic limb.^*

Alimatu, Sierra Leone

Alimatu was born with a below elbow limb difference and uses her Koalaa prosthetic for sweeping, writing, laundry and scraping fish. Alimatu found it difficult when growing up to make friends but since she started mingling with others who have limb differences she has built her confidence and has been trying new things.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is contaminated with anti-personnel mines and other explosive remnants of war, and the ongoing conflict makes it difficult for people with disabilities to access the services they need.

Social enterprise Ugani uses 3D scanners and printers to create lower limb prosthetics. Their digital system makes remote services possible, improving access and allowing prosthetists to reach 10 times more patients.

CAMBODIA

Since 1979 over 45,000 people have been injured by UXO and landmines in Cambodia, with many left with lifelong impairment. The country is working to be mine free by the end of 2025.

AGRILAB

Many people injured by landmines and UXO live in rural areas where agriculture is the primary source of income.

People’s Action for Inclusive Development’s AgriLab works with farmers with disabilities, including landmine injuries, to develop assistive technology tools to help them return to work. Over 300 Cambodian farmers have taken part in AgriLab workshops, co-designing items like water collectors, accessible chicken coups, and trailer attachments so wheelchair users can transport their tools and goods.

Mrs. Suon Pheap has a physical disability affecting one side of her body, as well as caring responsibilities for 3 generations of her family. AgriLab’s workshops introduced her to other farmers with disabilities, and the tools they developed together have improved her farm’s productivity and increased her income.

People cannot recover from trauma when their basic needs - like food, shelter and sustainable incomes - are not met.

Founded in 2017, Legacy of War Foundation’s Land for Women program is one example of a project working to address these basic needs through sustainable, community-led development. Land for Women partners with groups of Rwandan women who have experienced trauma and gender-based violence. It doesn’t seek to empower them - instead, by providing a route into land ownership and sustainable cooperative farming, it helps dismantle the barriers they face to self-empowerment and lifts whole families out of poverty. The pilot was created in collaboration with Imboni Cooperative, led by genocide and sexual violence survivor Olive whose story is shared in a film on the right.

Victorine From Rwanda

During the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda, Victorine's husband was murdered and she and her children were violently attacked. Decades later she still lives with constant pain and mobility issues, in a home with stairs which limit her activites.

The African Disability Protocol was adopted in 2018 by the African Union to ensure the rights of persons with disabilities - but requires 15 ratifications to come into force.

For 75 years, UN peacekeepers have saved and changed lives in the world’s most fragile political and security situations. They are ordinary people striving to achieve extraordinary outcomes in difficult and often dangerous conditions.

ɫ��TVkeepers help prevent conflict, protect civilians, advance political solutions, promote human rights, and support democratic processes. They also help build the capacity of state institutions and services and ensure that women and youth can participate in and lead peace processes.

Today, around 87,000 women and men work in environments that are more complex and hazardous than ever, amid rising global tensions and more complex conflict. More than 4,100 peacekeepers have given their lives while serving under the UN flag. While UN ɫ��TVkeeping is a unique tool of multilateralism and international solidarity, the pursuit of peace is not a solitary journey. Each of us has a role to play in building and sustaining peace.

This exhibit tells the story of United Nations peacekeeping and reminds us that ɫ��TV Begins With Me, you, and all of us.

ɫ��TVkeeping Begins

United Nations ɫ��TVkeeping began in 1948 when the Security Council authorized the deployment of military observers to the Middle East. The role of the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) was to monitor the Armistice Agreement between Israel and its Arab neighbours. Since then, more than 2 million uniformed and civilian personnel have served in 71 peacekeeping operations around the world, contributing to the cause of international security, peace and progress for all peoples.

United Nations Police

In 1960, police officers were deployed to a peacekeeping mission for the first time to serve with the UN Operation in the Congo (ONUC). Today, up to 9,000 UN Police officers from at least 90 countries protect vulnerable communities, strengthen the security sector and rule of law, and build the foundations for inclusive, effective, and accountable police services.

Civilians in Action

More than 14,000 civilians serve in diverse roles in UN peacekeeping operations, including leading field missions, supporting political and peace processes, promoting and protecting human rights, helping strengthen the rule of law, and communicating with communities affected by conflict.

Military Action

Known as Blue Helmets, UN military personnel are often deployed in the most remote and dangerous locations where they overcome huge challenges to help prevent violence, protect civilians, facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian aid, and build peace.

Today, around 70,000 military personnel from national armies around the world serve in 12 UN peacekeeping missions.

UN Mine Action

Since 1997, the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has helped reduce the threat of explosive hazards in conflict zones. Today, UNMAS works in 21 operations to destroy explosive devices and remnants of war to protect communities, enable the delivery of humanitarian aid and ensure the safe passage of peacekeepers. UNMAS also assists victims, provides risk education, and advocates for a world free of mines.

Political & ɫ��TV Processes

Securing political solutions and sustainable peace is a top priority. ɫ��TVkeeping missions help create safe spaces for dialogue, facilitate reconciliation and peacebuilding, and support free, fair, and inclusive democratic processes, including elections.

In 1988, UN ɫ��TVkeeping was awarded the Nobel ɫ��TV Prize because "under extremely difficult conditions, its forces contributed to reducing tensions where an armistice had been negotiated but a peace treaty was yet to be established.”

Protection of Civilians

In 1999, the UN Security Council made Protection of Civilians a core responsibility of a peacekeeping mission for the first time. Since then, 14 peacekeeping operations have been deployed with this specific mandate. Civilian, military and police peacekeepers contribute to this effort by providing protection, creating safe environments for displaced people to return home, supporting conflict resolution and peace talks, and strengthening the capacity of host governments through rule of law and security sector reform.

Child Protection

Children are disproportionately affected by war: killed and maimed, recruited and used as child soldiers, abducted, subjected to sexual violence, and denied access to humanitarian aid, healthcare and education.

ɫ��TVkeepers provide protection, ensure safe access to water, food, and medical care, help rebuild schools and medical facilities, and secure the release of child soldiers. By protecting children, who have often known nothing but war, peacekeepers can break the cycle of violence and lay the foundations for durable peace.

Women, ɫ��TV and Security

Violent conflict has a devastating impact on women and girls and intensifies existing gender inequalities and discrimination. In 2000, Security Council Resolution 1325 recognized this impact as well as the important contribution of women to conflict prevention and resolution, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding.

By advancing the Women, ɫ��TV and Security agenda, UN ɫ��TVkeeping works to protect women and girls from sexual and gender-based violence, promote their participation and leadership in political and peace processes and ensure that their voices, needs and priorities are included in all peacekeeping work.

Rule of Law and Security Sector Governance

Strong rule of law and security institutions are vital to stabilizing and securing sustainable peace in conflict-affected countries. UN ɫ��TVkeeping works to build the capacity of these institutions and services so that host countries can deliver justice and correctional services, ensure that all citizens are treated equally under the law, and that police and defense forces operate professionally and effectively.
