The works in this exhibition are a diverse selection of works by “neurodiverse” artists. Featured are acrylic, oil, mixed media, graphite, and watercolor paintings by artists from around the globe, including Serbia, Israel, India, Brazil, Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia, Philippines and the United States of America.</p> <p class="intropanel">By delving into the artwork's visual elements and emotional nuances, Perceptions of Sentience offers viewers a perspective on canvas that debunks historical myths regarding autism, such as “autistic people have no empathy or lack feelings.”</p> <p class="intropanel">Although there has been progress in debunking this view, there is still a persistent narrative within society that autistic people lack empathy.</p> <p class="intropanel">Our intention is for viewers to experience a cathartic and powerful emotional release when engaging with these artworks. This emotional journey can lead to a deeper understanding of the abilities of individuals with autism, fostering positive change. The primary goal is for the audience to connect with the artists’ work on an emotional level, whether the art is a portrait that captures a moment of joy, sadness, or laughter or a piece that delves into the complexities of bullying, loneliness, seclusion, mental health, and emotional regulation. The secondary goal is to shine a light on disability-related stigma and systemic barriers, fostering empathy and reducing inequalities and vulnerabilities.</p> <p class="intropanel"><strong>World Autism Awareness Day</strong> (April 2^nd) is an annual internationally recognized day encouraging Member States of the United Nations to take measures to raise awareness about autistic individuals throughout the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that worldwide about 1 in 100 children have autism. This estimate represents an average figure and reported prevalence varies substantially across studies. Some well-controlled studies have, however, reported figures that are substantially higher. The prevalence of autism in many low- and middle-income countries is unknown. Autism spectrum disorders are also 4 times more common among boys than among girls. A 2020 meta-analysis showed that victimization of individuals with ASD is significantly higher than that in typically developing students and students with other disabilities.</p> <p class="intropanel" style=" font-size: 1em">Recent meta-analysis reviews of systematic studies of the literature show the global burden of suicide mortality among people on the autism spectrum is rising. The International Association for Suicide Prevention provides worldwide hotlines for support.</p> <p class="intropanel" style=" font-size: 1em">Autism acceptance may be one of the most important components to debunking myths. Acceptance, inclusion and non-discrimination may be a powerful tool toward this end. The capacity to have feelings (sentience) requires a level of awareness and cognitive ability. Early definitions of autism often included “lack of feelings and emotions” and an “unawareness of environment” as some of the defining characteristics of autism.</p> <p class="intropanel" style=" font-size: 1em"><strong>Myth</strong>: People with autism exist in their own world and can't feel or express emotion—happy or sad. Participants painted images of their homes and their villages in Yei, Waw, and Malakal in South Sudan. The food distribution bag was then brought to a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh where children were inspired by this imagery to draw traditional folklore patterns, the helicopter they remember when they fled, and their images of home. The exchange shows the eternal connection to home and the bond among communities in displacement situations, as well as refugees’ hope for a meaningful future. The collaborative mural creation was part of a project to rehabilitate their school after it was bombed and destroyed. The children painted a dragon of protection and their dreams of a “clear sky”, where no bombs will fall. <p style="padding-bottom: 10px">Photographs by Syrian Refugee Youth in Lebanon and Jordan 2014-15. As war ravaged Syria, hundreds of thousands of children fled to refugee camps and informal settlements in neighboring countries. UNHCR partnered with photographer Brendan Bannon to offer a series of workshops for some of these children to share their stories through photography and text. The results have been featured in newspapers, magazines and exhibitions worldwide. Now 6 years later these refugees share images of their lives today.</p> <p>These brave and personal pictures illustrate war and its consequences as they are experienced by refugee children and youth. Through their photography we see a fragment of what they have seen. They tell us of lives unmade by war and remade with courage, determination, curiosity and compassion. They show us that these are the tools of survival, these are the tools they find to navigate the tragic and traumatic disruption of life.</p> <p style="padding-bottom: 10px">“The premise is simple. Young people are experts in their own lives. They have the ability to perceive and express the complexity of their experiences. Their voices are necessary and should be heard. This work shows young people facing overwhelming challenges. Yet, amidst the trauma that they experience, there is resilience, optimism, and decency. This can be surprising to people who only expect to see tragedy,” said Bannon.</p> <p style="padding-bottom: 10px">The project is designed with a series of impacts in mind. Updated 2020 photographs from this initial project are now included in this exhibit. Children had an opportunity to create and connect with peers through photography, especially with classmates and their families.
