UNOCT hosts Regional Forum for National Focal Points on Major Sporting Event in Asia and the Pacific
The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), through its Global Programme on Security of Major Sporting Events and Promotion of Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism, organized a National Focal Points (NFPs) Regional Forum for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand, on 10-12 May 2022. The event built on the success of the European NFPs Regional Forum, held in Malaga, Spain, in December 2021.
The Forum in Bangkok brought together 17 NFPs from across the region, providing a platform to exchange lessons learned and good practices on the security of major sporting events, as well as on the use of sport as a tool to prevent violent extremism conducive to terrorism (PVE). Discussions were tailored to regional characteristics, including common legal frameworks, geographical features, and specific terrorism threats and drivers of violent extremism conducive to terrorism.
The three-day event included expert presentations, working group sessions, and networking opportunities, enabling participants to share national perspectives. The Forum strengthened regional cooperation and enhanced Member States¡¯ capacities to apply recognized standards when developing advanced PVE policies, or when planning the security of upcoming major sporting events.
